In the vey first year UM BHA gave out the award, there were 13 applicants.  This very first pool of applicants came from both the UM BHA Club and the student chapter of The Wildlife Society.  All of these were people who had known and worked with Becca at some point.

In this first year, UM BHA, James and his father Ken Goerz, and the Romero family each contributed funds to pay for a single student award each.
